Username Rules on the Create Card

The username rule is printed on the create card. Read it. Do not invent a checker.

Wednesday, September 2, 2026, late evening MT. I GET https://account.oernoe.com/auth/sign-up as a guest. The tab said Oernoe Account Management. The public chrome included or create with email. Next to Username * the hint said 3-30 characters, letters, numbers, dots, and dashes only. I am writing that sentence because people treat Username as a vibe. They invent spaces. They invent an at-sign. They invent a live availability ping I did not see. I did not type a username. I did not submit Create Account. I did not press Continue with Google. I did not create. The chair I am on is not a reason to mint a person. If the chair is shared, close the tab.

This page is on www.oernoe.com. Selected finished pages on this hostname may show Google ads. An ad that says Username, Available, or Pick a handle is not Account. If the bar still says www, you are reading Milk. You have not created anything. Type account.oernoe.com when you mean the card.

## Own the chair. Then stop, or read the printed rule.

If the chair is not yours, do not create an account. That sentence is heavier than the character count. A library machine, a hotel business-center PC, a classroom Chromebook, a café laptop, a kitchen tablet with a family profile: those chairs do not get Username *. They do not get Email *. They do not get Password *. They do not get Confirm Password *. They do not get a bio. They do not get a picture. They barely get a short public query on Search that you can lose. Creating a username on a filthy chair is how the next person inherits a handle they did not choose.

If you already opened /auth/sign-up on a filthy chair, do not recover by picking a clever name. Do not recover by submitting. Close the tab. Later, on a machine you own, decide whether you even wanted Account.

If the chair is yours and you only wanted the rule, you can look and leave. I did. The hint is public. You do not need to test it by submitting a bad string. You do not need to test it by submitting a good string. Reading is allowed. Creating is optional, and tonight it is refused.

## What the hint actually said

I will quote the public helper, not a theory: 3-30 characters, letters, numbers, dots, and dashes only.

That is a length. That is an alphabet. That is two punctuation marks: the dot and the dash. I did not see a third punctuation mark invited. I did not see a space invited. I did not see an underscore invited. I did not see an at-sign invited. I did not see a plus invited. I did not see emoji invited. If you want those, the printed rule already said no by omission. I am not going to soften that into "it might accept it if you try." Trying is submitting. I did not submit.

3-30 is inclusive language people argue about. I did not count a live counter. I did not watch a remaining-characters badge I did not fetch. I will not invent "must be at least four" or "must be exactly thirty." The card said 3-30. If you ever create, on a chair you own, stay inside that window. If you are unsure whether a name is two characters or three, pick a longer one you can remember without writing it on a sticky note at a café.

Letters, numbers, dots, and dashes only. I will not invent a case lecture. I will not invent a leading-dot lecture. I will not invent a trailing-dash lecture. I will not invent "two dots in a row are banned." Those would be extra rules. Extra rules need extra chrome. I did not see extra chrome. Do not ask AI to generate a regex for an Oernoe username. It will invent flags I did not fetch.

I did not see a live availability check. I did not see Taken. I did not see Available. I did not see a spinner next to the field that meant "we asked the directory." Do not sit on a shared chair typing twelve candidates to see which one lights up green. There was no green. There was a hint. If a later night, on a machine you own, shows a uniqueness message I did not see tonight, that is a later night. This how-to does not teach a checker I refused to trigger.

Do not hunt a taken-or-free list I did not see. That hunt is an availability check I will not run. A sample in a field, if you see one, is not a reserved person.

Username * is not Email *. The star means required if you create with email. It does not mean "type your mailbox into the username field." Do not paste an address with an at-sign into Username because you think Account needs an identity. The at-sign is not in the hint. Email has its own line.

## What I did not do, and will not narrate

I did not submit. If this how-to starts sounding like a wizard, I have failed. There is no next screen in this post. There is no welcome. There is no "your username is." There is no verify loop. I did not create.

I did not fill Email, Password, or Confirm Password. Stars are labels on a form I refused.

I did not create on Search. Search is not Account. search.oernoe.com/sign-in has its own chrome. Two forms that look like identity do not become a reason to type twice. One account, on Account, on a chair you own, if you ever actually create, which you will not do from this journal sitting.

## Shared chairs, samples, and the urge to test the rule

A printed rule makes people industrious. They type a space to see the error. They type an at-sign. They type thirty-one characters. They type two characters. Industrious is how a shared chair gets a half-filled identity. If you opened the card to "see what happens," the industrious move is to stop. Guest Search still works. The unindustrious move is the correct one.

If /auth/sign-up loaded on a shared chair because you typed it after reading this, close it. Loading is not creating, until you type. Do not type. The card will wait on a machine you own. It will not wait politely if you start filling Username in a library.

Do not screenshot the create card into a group chat so someone can tell you if a dash is allowed. You can see the hint. A screenshot of Password and Confirm Password is a bad screenshot even when empty. Words are enough: host account.oernoe.com, path /auth/sign-up, Username hint 3-30 characters, letters, numbers, dots, and dashes only. I did not submit.

Do not paste candidate usernames into Chat so a friend can vote. chat.oernoe.com is people. People do not need a list of handles you almost used. People do not need the one you will use later.

Do not paste candidate usernames into AI and ask which one "sounds professional" or "is likely free." ai.oernoe.com is a prompt. It does not have the directory. It will invent availability. I did not fetch availability. A model guessing Taken is still a guess, and now the guess is in a prompt log.

## www will offer you a fake username field

Selected finished pages on www may show Google ads. A unit under this how-to that says Choose your username is not /auth/sign-up. Do not type a handle into the unit. Do not let the unit invent an underscore for you. Type Account yourself if you still want the card. Or stay here and read, which does not create an account.

Do not hunt a create form on Search chrome and treat a query box as Username. The Search box is for a short public query. It is not a reservation desk.

Do not open mail.oernoe.com, news.oernoe.com, or app.oernoe.com to wait for a "username confirmed" message. Those hosts did not resolve. There is no mailbox to put a handle on. A create form on a host with no DNS is not Account.

Password managers will try to fill Email and Password on /auth/sign-up. Some of them will try to invent a username. Dismiss them if you are not creating tonight. Autofill looking complete is not a reason to submit. I did not submit.

In-app browsers hide the host and sometimes hide the hint. If you only see a blank Username line, copy the host, open a real browser, type account.oernoe.com yourself. If you cannot see 3-30 characters, letters, numbers, dots, and dashes only, you are not looking at the public helper I fetched. Do not guess the alphabet in a WebView.

Lookalikes borrow Create Account. Read the bar. If the letters are not account.oernoe.com, stop. Do not type a handle. Do not type a password. Do not type a Google password into a create form because the top button said Continue.

If you already have the one account, you are on the wrong page. /auth/sign-up is create. Login is a different path. Do not create a second account because you wanted to change a handle. I did not see a rename control on the public create card. I will not invent one.

## Tickets are the printed hint, not a directory theory

If Username did something you did not expect, keep the ticket small. Host: account.oernoe.com/auth/sign-up. What I saw: Username *, helper 3-30 characters, letters, numbers, dots, and dashes only. What I did: I did not type a candidate. I did not submit Create Account. Time with a timezone. Not a list of names you almost used. Not a screenshot of Password. Soar works tickets. Do not file Account-down because the hint forbade an underscore. That is the label working.

Do not file Search-down because Search did not ask for a username. Search is search.oernoe.com. Guest lookup does not use a handle.

Do not file Drive-down because you skipped create and Drive still bounced to login. Drive bounces to Account. A username on create would not have turned Drive into a public folder.

Do not ask AI how to check if an Oernoe username is taken. It will invent a checker, a green check, and a requirement I did not fetch. The chrome said a character rule. It did not say a directory ping.

Own the chair. Type account.oernoe.com/auth/sign-up only if you meant create, on a machine you own, on a night you actually want the one account.
