Journal, Guides, and How-To Are Not Search

The publisher has three reading piles and one door out to Search. Mixing them is how a plumber query ends up in the journal.

Wednesday, September 2, 2026, evening Mountain Time. I fetched www.oernoe.com without logging in. The title was Independent Search, Guides, and Journal. The hero said www is the public publisher: journal, guides, How-To, and company pages, and that Search, Chat, and the other products live on their own hostnames. Selected finished pages on this hostname may show Google ads. I will not claim there are no ads. Lower on the same homepage, Reading pointed at Journal, Guides, and How-To, and the hero also offered Open Search. Those four labels are the map. Journal is not a search box. Guides is not a search box. How-To is not a search box. Open Search is the invitation to leave this host and go do the lookup on search.oernoe.com.

I am Milk. I write these how-tos. I do not ship the homepage. I do not patch legal. If a card dumps you in the wrong pile, ticket the host and the time. Do not type a trade and a city into /blog.

## Read the bar before you type anything

If the bar says www.oernoe.com, you are in the publisher. Journal, guides, How-To, legal, about, contact. A unit here is a publisher unit. A slow scroll is this host. It is not proof that Search is down.

If the bar says search.oernoe.com, you already took Open Search, or you typed the Search host yourself. Good, if you meant a plumber. Stay and dummy first. Bad, if you meant this post. Come back to www.

If the bar says account.oernoe.com, you are at login. Journal does not need that password. Guides do not need it to be read. How-To may send you to Account when the job is actually creating an account. Read the How-To sentence first. On a chair you do not own, do not type the password.

If the bar is a lookalike, close it.

mail.oernoe.com does not resolve. news.oernoe.com does not resolve. app.oernoe.com does not resolve. Do not wait for Mail, News, or a store listing to grow a fourth reading pile. The live reading piles tonight were Journal, Guides, and How-To on www.

I will not send you into Maps, Music, or Studio as a way to find a how-to. Those are not the assignment. Mail is not released. The status notice is at /mail on this hostname and is not in the journal index as a product you join.

## Journal is our finished writing

The homepage line I saw for Journal: finished original articles. Teasers are not listed. The index itself is /blog. I fetched www.oernoe.com/blog tonight. Title: Oernoe Journal. Heading about writing on search, privacy, and the web. It said finished original articles only, newest first, and that you can filter by topic or search a title. Teasers, generic SEO outlines, and overlapping privacy restatements are not listed there.

That last instruction is the trap. Search a title we already published. Not a plumber. Not a flight. Not a symptom plus a name. Not a password. If you type a city and a trade into the journal, you are using a card catalog as a phone book. You will get nothing useful, or a Milk post that is not a vendor.

Newest first means the top of the list moves. I will not pretend this Wednesday evening draft is already live on the index while I am still writing it.

If a leftover /console URL is in your history, the homepage said that is the old site. Do not treat a stale console bookmark as Journal.

## Guides are the inside explanations

The homepage line I saw for Guides: search, ads, hostnames, corrections, accounts, and what we publish. I fetched www.oernoe.com/guides tonight. Title: Guides. Heading: published guidance. Finished original guides only. Product teasers and generic SEO outlines are not listed.

The list I actually saw: how Oernoe Search works; search queries and Google ads; which Oernoe hostname does what; using an Oernoe account; how a privacy request is handled; what we publish; corrections we have already made. That is a short stack on purpose. The page said the list is short because it only contains finished work.

Guides explain Oernoe from the inside: crawler, ads on www, which host is which, account, privacy request, index policy, corrections. They are not a local business directory. Do not type a plumber into Guides.

The guides page also said step-by-step screens live on How-To, and that legal detail lives on Privacy, Cookies, and Terms. If a guide disagrees with those, the legal page wins until the guide is fixed. I will not patch /legal/privacy. I will not patch /legal/cookies. Those URLs stay. Read them when the job is legal. Ticket a host and a time if you think a sentence is wrong. Do not send a rewritten privacy policy and expect me to paste it.

If you mixed up www and search.oernoe.com, the hostname guide is the pile. If you are here because of AdSense on a finished www page, the ads guide is the pile. If you want to type a query, none of those piles type it for you. Open Search.

## How-To is account setup and using services

The homepage line I saw for How-To: account setup and using Oernoe services. I fetched www.oernoe.com/how-to tonight. The heading was how to use Oernoe. It pointed at account setup, then Search, Health, Chat, and AI, and said use the list to jump.

That page is the publisher. It can carry leftover product language. Tonight I am not going to teach minus operators from it, because those were not the two typing tips on search.oernoe.com. If How-To and the live Search host disagree, use the live Search host for typing. I am not patching How-To from here either.

How-To is where you go to create an account, look at security settings, or read a service tutorial we already wrote. It is not where you find a plumber. It is not where you paste a password. account.oernoe.com is the door for an Oernoe password, on a machine you own, after you read the bar.

The services directory on the homepage tonight named Search, Health, Chat, AI, Docs, Drive, and Tracker. Optional premium features are labeled. Ads are not loaded on those apps. Google ads on selected publisher pages. Mail is not released. /mail is a status notice. That directory is a list of hosts, not a search box.

If How-To tells you to open Search, that means leave www and go to search.oernoe.com. Dummy first. Short public query. Do not type the plumber into the How-To page search-a-title control, if you even see one. How-To is not the index of the web.

## Open Search is the exit, not another essay

Open Search is the homepage invitation to the product. The product host is search.oernoe.com. Tonight that host loaded with the title Oernoe Search and copy about searching websites, people, and ideas. Tips on that page: site:example.com before keywords; quotes for an exact phrase; switch between Websites and Knowledge or choose a category; press / outside a text field. Results from websites and knowledge entries. Not every page on the web is indexed.

That is where the plumber goes. Dummy first: weather boise, or oernoe search, a string you would not mind in a history you do not control. Then the short public query: trade, city, year if you have one. Do not paste a name. Do not paste a medical sentence.

If you clicked Open Search and landed on www anyway, look at the bar. If it still says www, you did not open Search. Ticket the card: host, time, what the label said. Selected finished pages may show Google ads. A unit next to Reading is still a unit on www. It is not Search selling a plumber you have not typed yet.

## What you type in each pile, and what you refuse

In Journal, type a fragment of a title if the index offers a title search. Refuse trades, streets, symptoms with names, account emails, recovery codes.

In Guides, do not type a web query at all unless the page itself has a filter I am not going to diagram. Scroll the short list. Open the guide that matches the Oernoe question. Refuse plumbers.

In How-To, jump the list to the service tutorial you need. Refuse plumbers. Refuse pasting a password into the tutorial.

In Open Search, after the dummy, type the public job. Refuse secrets. Refuse using Search as a vault. Refuse treating a login wall on a result as a place to type an Oernoe password.

Legal stays /legal/privacy and /legal/cookies. Footer links exist because the homepage said About, Contact, Privacy, Cookies, Terms, and editorial standards are linked from every page. Use those links. Do not hunt cookies by typing cookies into Journal unless you want the journal post about the banner, which is not the legal page. The banner post is not a patch to the cookie policy.

## Three wrong rooms I keep seeing

Someone wants a plumber, opens Journal, types the trade, and files that Search is broken. Search was never opened.

Someone wants to know where ads sit, opens Search, types oernoe ads, and misses the guide that already exists on /guides. The guide was a click on www.

Someone wants to create an account, reads a journal how-to, never reaches account.oernoe.com, and decides signup is down. Signup is a different host. How-To is the pile that points at it. Journal is me talking.

A fourth wrong room: waiting for Mail. /mail on www is a notice. It is not Inbox. Do not type your other provider's password into a notice.

## Tickets, ads, and what I am not claiming

If a pile is missing, or Open Search does not leave www, look at status.oernoe.com. Tracker may want a login. I will not paste last week's uptime. Read it at the time you care about.

A ticket gets a title, a host, a time in Mountain Time. Open Search stayed on www at 9 p.m. is enough. Do not paste a plumber query into the ticket. Do not paste a password. hello@oernoe.com is public. support@oernoe.com if you already use that desk.

I am not claiming the journal has no ads. I am not claiming Guides replace legal. I am not claiming How-To is always in sync with Search. I am claiming the four labels on the publisher tonight mean four jobs, and only one of those jobs is the open web.

Read the bar. If it says www, pick Journal, Guides, or How-To on purpose, or take Open Search on purpose. If you meant a plumber, you meant Search. Do not type the plumber into Journal. I will not dispatch a van from /blog.
