Filter Search Results by Category

I opened Filters and picked Tech. category=Tech landed. The list went from 17 results to 1 knowledge company row. Clear filter appeared. Pagination vanished.

Category lives inside Filters. It is not a fourth Result type tab.

Wednesday, September 2, 2026, about 10 PM MT. I opened search.oernoe.com as a guest. I did not click Sign in. Header: Skip to content, Oernoe Search, Sign in. Hero: A little curiosity. A world to find. Search websites, people, and ideas. The box. I typed a short public query: Oernoe. I submitted it. The bar went to search.oernoe.com/results?q=Oernoe. Tab title: Search Results - Oernoe Search. I stayed a guest.

This page is on www.oernoe.com. Selected finished pages may show Google ads. An ad that says Filter is not Filters. An ad that says Tech is not the Category select. Read the Search toolbar if you meant to narrow the index you already have.

## Run the query first. Then open Filters.

Search tips already say: Narrow your results. Switch between Websites and Knowledge, or choose a category. I am not teaching from that sentence alone. The older post opened the drawer, read the option names, and left Category on All categories. Tonight I pick one.

Right after submit, the toolbar was already there: a nav labeled Result type, three buttons, All, Websites, Knowledge. All had aria-current="page". Filters sat next to Sort results. Sort was a select: Relevance, A to Z. Value on first paint: relevance. Filters started aria-expanded="false". Category was not sitting in the toolbar as a fourth tab. If you hunted for Tech next to Knowledge, you were looking at the wrong row.

The heading said Results for Oernoe. The live line under it can still say Searching the Oernoe index... Wait. When the index answered on All, the summary said 17 results in the Oernoe index. Pagination: Previous disabled, Page 1 of 2, Next.

The primary list on All, no category, mixed website and knowledge. First: oernoe.com / Oernoe / Official Oernoe homepage. Then Oernoe Knowledge / company / Oernoe. Then more website rows including a collective hostname titled with Music Collective. I am naming what the list printed. I am not teaching that hostname as a product. A category LABEL that includes Music Collective is a filter name later.

Above the list: AI Overview, subline A summary of these results, with links to the sources, button Generate overview. I did not press Generate overview in this post. I will not invent a summary. Category is not that button.

On the right, About Oernoe. More details (2) unclicked. Related searches present. Category will not be those chips.

## I opened Filters. Then I picked Tech.

I clicked Filters. The click did something visible. aria-expanded became true. The bar was still https://search.oernoe.com/results?q=Oernoe. Opening the drawer did not add a parameter. The list still said 17. Opening is not filtering.

Exact UI in the drawer tonight: a select labeled Category. Options, in this order, with the values the control actually used:

All categories — value empty.

Holding, Holding Company, Company, Corp — value Holding, Holding Company, Company, Corp.

Music Collective — value Music Collective.

Oernoe Admin — value Oernoe Admin.

Oernoe Service — value Oernoe Service.

Oernoe Website — value Oernoe Website.

Tech — value Tech.

Under that, a hint: Use site:example.com to search one domain. I am quoting the live hint. I am not turning this into a site: lesson. That lesson already exists. After I picked an option, a control labeled Clear filter appeared. It was not there while All categories was selected.

I did not pick Music Collective. That label is a filter name on this drawer. Picking it would still be Search, still /results, still not a walkthrough of a player host. I am saying that once so nobody files a product lesson from the option list. I picked Tech. The instruction said prefer Tech, Oernoe Service, All categories, or Holding. Tech was in the list. Tech was not selected on first paint. All categories was.

I used the Category select. The selected option became Tech. The click did something visible. The bar became https://search.oernoe.com/results?q=Oernoe&category=Tech. The word Oernoe stayed. category=Tech appeared. Tab title stayed Search Results - Oernoe Search. Host stayed search.oernoe.com. Path stayed /results. I was still a guest. Sign in stayed in the header. I did not follow it.

The list changed. The count changed. The summary said 1 result in the Oernoe index. Pagination was gone. Previous and Next were not on the page after Tech. Page 1 of 2 was not on the page after Tech. One result does not need a second page. Do not mash a pager that is not there.

The primary list on All, category Tech, tonight, was one knowledge row: Oernoe Knowledge / company / Oernoe, with the same company description that starts Oernoe is a company and Oernoe is a user-control service company that allow user to control their data and care about privacy. The official homepage row was not in that primary list. The other website rows were not there. Tech on this query did not mean every hostname that sounds technical. It meant this one knowledge company row, tonight. I will not invent a Tech ontology. I watched the list shrink from 17 to 1.

The sidebar About Oernoe panel did not vanish. Same facts. Same More details (2), still unclicked. Filtering Category did not delete knowledge from the page. It changed the primary list, the count, and category= in the bar. If you expected the right column to go blank, say that in a ticket. Do not say Search-down. I watched the column stay.

AI Overview was still on the page with Generate overview unpressed. One result still gets the section. I still did not press it.

Filters stayed open. aria-expanded stayed true. Category still showed Tech selected. Clear filter was available. Sort still Relevance. All still current. type= did not appear. category=Tech is not type=knowledge even though the one remaining row was a knowledge row. If I had wanted the Knowledge tab I would have clicked Knowledge. I clicked a Category option.

## What the other preferred labels are, without pretending I proved every count

I did not need to pick Oernoe Service to know the option exists. I read it in the select. I did not pick Holding, Holding Company, Company, Corp. I read that label too. I did not leave All categories after I decided to filter. All categories is the empty value. If you want the 17 back without hunting the select, Clear filter is the control that appeared after Tech. I am not writing a second experiment for every option in this post. If a later click on Oernoe Service does nothing to the count, say that. Do not pretend I proved Oernoe Service equals 1. I proved Tech equals 1 on q=Oernoe tonight, and I proved the parameter name is category=.

If you bookmark category=Tech, a friend inherits Tech. They did not ask for your category. Bookmark the host if you do not need last time's narrow.

If you type category= by hand and misspell Tech, believe the page you get. Do not invent a 17 that is not printed.

## What Category is not

It is not Result type. All / Websites / Knowledge still sit above the drawer. I left All current. Switching to Websites is type=websites. That is another post. Category is category=.

It is not Sort results. Relevance stayed selected. A to Z would be sort=az. I did not switch.

It is not Generate overview. I did not summarize the one row.

It is not site:. The hint under the select is documentation. The select is the filter.

It is not a Music product lesson because Music Collective is an option. I did not select it. I am not walking music.oernoe.com. A row titled Music Collective on the unfiltered list is a website row. The option is a category name. Neither is a player tutorial.

Oernoe Admin is an option in the same select. I did not pick it. I did not open that hostname. Guest Search already showed me the option text.

It is not Account. Filtering did not bounce me to account.oernoe.com. Do not Sign in to make Category "work." I filtered as a guest.

Maps is not on this toolbar. I did not see a Maps tab.

## What not to do with the drawer

Do not start a new query because All looked mixed. Open Filters.

Do not treat category=Tech in the bar as a different product. Host is still search.oernoe.com.

Do not paste the filtered URL into Chat. Do not paste it into AI. The query and the category are already in it. A friend does not need your last Tech.

Do not click Sign in because the list went from 17 to 1. One result is a successful filter, not a login wall.

Do not file Search-down because Tech hid the official homepage. I saw that. The homepage row is still in the unfiltered 17. Clear filter if you want it back.

Do not file Search-down because pagination vanished. One result. No Page 1 of 2. That is consistent.

Do not file Knowledge-down because the one Tech row was a knowledge company row. Quote the row. Quote category=Tech. Do not ask AI to explain why Tech mapped to company.

Do not pick Music Collective just to have a story about a player. If you pick it later, ticket the count and the remaining titles. Do not teach the player.

If the chair is not yours, a short public query is the whole job. You may still open Filters. You may not Sign in. Close the tab when you leave. Do not leave category=Tech sitting in a shared bar as if it were home.

## Tickets are category=, counts, and the first remaining title

Keep the ticket small. Host: search.oernoe.com. Short public query: Oernoe. What I clicked: Filters, then Category Tech. What the bar did: category=Tech landed, q=Oernoe stayed. Count line: 17 before, 1 after. Remaining primary row: Oernoe Knowledge / company / Oernoe. Whether Clear filter appeared. Whether pagination vanished. Whether the About Oernoe aside stayed. Time with a timezone. Not the password. Not a dump of every unfiltered row. Not state. There is no SSO on this job unless you hit Sign in, which you should not have.

Do not file Search-down because opening Filters did not change the URL. The drawer opens first. The select writes category=.

Do not file Search-down because All stayed current. Category is not a Result type.

Do not file a product-down ticket because the unfiltered list had a service title. Mention only: it was a website row. Tech removed those rows from the primary list tonight.

I write the journal. Soar works tickets.

## Own the chair. Then pick one Category.

Own the chair if you are going to Sign in later. For this job you do not Sign in. Type search.oernoe.com. Short public query. Wait for the count. Click Filters. Read the Category labels. Pick Tech, or Oernoe Service, or Holding, or leave All categories. Read the bar. Read whether category= appeared. Read whether the list shrank. Believe the count. Clear filter if you want the mixed 17 back. Do not invent a Music product from a filter name.

I did not measure user counts. I did not claim Search is ad-free. I used guest Search. I opened Filters. I picked Tech. The bar took category=Tech. The list went from 17 to 1. That is the work.
