Search, Chat, or AI: Which Oernoe Box to Open

You do not need all three tiles. You need the one that matches the job.

I am writing this at the end of August 2026. Search is at search.oernoe.com. Chat is at chat.oernoe.com. AI is at ai.oernoe.com. They are different hosts. They are different jobs. Opening the wrong one is how a private sentence becomes a prompt, or how a lookup becomes a conversation you did not mean to have.

www.oernoe.com is the publisher site. Journal, legal pages, ads. It is not Search. It is not Chat. It is not AI. If you landed here from a card, you are reading a post. Close it when you are done.

## Search is for looking something up

Use Search when you would have opened a search engine. A spelling. A date. A public page. An error message from a tool you already use. A news topic you already follow.

Do not paste a full document into Search. Search is not a trash can for text. If the query is longer than a sentence, you probably wanted Docs or a file you already have.

Do not ask Search to keep a secret. A query is a query. Keep it short. If you need a second engine for maps, shopping carousels, or a tracking number, use the second engine. I do. I already wrote that Search can be the wrong tool. This post is about not dragging Chat or AI into a job Search already handles.

If the results look old or off, note the query. Do not open AI to "rewrite the internet" for you. Try a better query first. Then a second engine. Then, if you still care, a ticket with the query you used, not a speech.

## Chat is for messages to people

Use Chat when you are talking to a person. A friend. A classmate. A group that already exists. Chat is a communication service. I will keep calling it that so nobody turns it into a personality.

Do not paste a Health note into Chat. Do not paste a password. Do not paste a client's file. Chat is how text leaves your machine and sits on someone else's screen. That is the feature. Treat it that way.

If you meant to write a note to yourself, that is Docs, or a paper notebook. Chat is a terrible diary because diaries are not supposed to have recipients.

If Chat will not send, look at Tracker before you write a novel. tracker.oernoe.com. Status is at status.oernoe.com. Then a ticket with the host and the time. Not the message body.

If you are on a shared computer, maybe do not open Chat at all. The last message on the screen is a postcard to the next person in the chair.

## AI is for a task you can describe without the real data

Use AI when you have a job that is "make a outline," "explain this public concept," "rephrase this sentence I already made boring on purpose." The skill is giving it less than the task needs, not more.

Do not paste a medical history. Do not paste a full student paper with the student's name. Do not paste API keys, recovery codes, or a password "so it can debug the login." If the box will accept it, that is not permission. That is a text field.

If you need research with sources you can click, start in Search. Then, if you want a summary of a page you already opened, decide whether you trust that summary. I do not let AI be the only copy of a fact I care about. I click through.

If you want writing help, paste a dummy paragraph first. See what it does. Then decide whether your real paragraph belongs there. Dummy first is the same habit I want in Docs and Drive. It is not cute. It is how you learn a limit without paying with a secret.

## A few jobs and the box I would open

"What time is the library open on Sunday." Search.

"Tell Jordan I am late." Chat.

"Give me three ways to outline a history paper about a public topic." AI, then you write the paper in Docs or somewhere you already write.

"Why is my account making me sign in again." Not AI. Not Chat. Tracker, then Support if it is still wrong. Titles, not passwords.

"Summarize this PDF of my labs." Not AI. Not Chat. That PDF stays with you or with a clinician. If you need a reminder, Health gets one line, not the PDF.

"Find a page I saw last week." Search, with a better query. We are not a memory palace for your tabs.

"Brainstorm names for a club." AI is fine. Those names are not secrets.

"Help me write a message to my landlord about mold." Write it in Docs or on paper. If you use AI, strip the address and the landlord's name first. Then copy the useful sentences out and finish the letter yourself.

## What I will not pretend

I will not pretend the three boxes share one log you can see. I will not pretend I can name every setting on your screen. I will not pretend AI "doesn't store anything" as a slogan. I will not pretend Chat is "just like texting" if I have not sat next to your phone. I will not pretend Search is Google. It is Search. Use it as Search.

If a landing page promises that all three are one magical layer, ignore the landing page. Open the host you need.

## How you get into trouble

You open AI because Search felt slow. You paste the whole email thread. You get a summary. You also gave the box a thread.

You open Chat because you wanted a note. You send it to the wrong person, or you leave it on a shared screen.

You open Search and type a paragraph of symptoms plus a full name. That was a Health problem and a privacy problem in one query.

The fix is rude and small. Name the job out loud. Then pick the host. If you cannot name the job, do not paste.

## A dummy run I actually like

Pick a sentence you do not care about. Run it through Search as a query. Paste it into AI as a rewrite. Do not send it in Chat unless a real person should see it. Notice that those are three different actions. One looks up. One transforms. One delivers. If you keep those verbs straight, you will leak less.

If AI refuses a harmless dummy, that is useful. You learned a limit. If AI accepts a dummy that looks like a secret, that is also useful. You learned that the box will not save you from yourself.

## When to use none of them

If you are angry. If you are in a clinic waiting room typing with your thumb. If the machine is not yours. If the only copy of a thing lives in the paste buffer. Close the tab. Walk. Then pick a box on a machine you own, with a dummy, with less data.

Search for lookups. Chat for people. AI for tasks you can describe without the real file. Everything else can wait.


## School and work, without being cute

If the writing is for a class, the paper belongs in Docs or wherever you already turn work in. AI can talk about a public topic. It should not see the rubric with your name, the classmate comments, or the grade. Strip those. Then, if you still want help, ask for structure, not a finished essay you will submit.

If the writing is for a job, the client name is the first thing to remove. Then the dollar amounts. Then the unique facts that identify the deal. If what is left is too thin to be useful, that is your answer: this task does not belong in AI.

If a teacher or a boss wants a Chat log, that is a people problem. Chat is not your archive. Copy out what you need into a place you control, with names you are allowed to keep.

## When two boxes are honest

Sometimes you Search, then you Chat someone a link. That is fine. You did not paste the whole result list. You sent a URL.

Sometimes you AI a dummy outline, then you write in Docs. That is fine. The dummy stayed dummy.

Sometimes you Chat "is Search down for you" after you looked at Tracker. That is fine. You did not paste a Health screenshot into the group.

The dishonest version is using the second box to launder data the first box should never have seen. Do not launder.

Name the job. Open one host. Dummy if you are unsure. People in Chat, lookups in Search, tasks without the real file in AI.
