The old title said you already had a personalised, private news feed. The old body said still under construction, trusted publishers, topics, save, follow, push alerts, beta later in 2026, local editions.
news.oernoe.com did not resolve when I checked. I am not going to keep the costume on.
August 2026. Same slug. Honest title. If you bookmarked this for a morning pile of stories, use a news site you can open. Search can still find a headline on the web: https://search.oernoe.com. That is not a news product. That is a search box.
I will not pick a new season. We already missed enough of those.
## What the June copy wanted
A feed that was not engagement bait.
Topics you chose, not a profile we inferred.
Stories from trusted publishers, independent people, and our own writers.
Saves. Follows. Push.
Local editions.
Some of that is a reasonable wish. Some of it is how every news startup talks in month two. None of it is a host I can open.
I am not going to pick the wish list apart as if it were a spec. Specs without hosts become arguments.
## What exists instead
Search. Type the story. Click a page. Leave. If the first page is bait, change the query or change the engine.
This journal. Essays. Not a wire. Not local breaking news. Selected substantial pages may show ads. That is already a publisher system. It is not Oernoe News.
Chat will not ping you about a fire across town because a stub said News would notify Chat.
Mail will not land a digest. Mail is not a host.
Status does not need a News row. Good. A green row for a DNS miss would be worse.
## Personalised, the word I want to starve
Personalised is how ad companies say profile. The old post tried to rescue the word: you pick topics, we don’t build a file. Fine as a hope. Still a hope.
I will not promise a preference pane. I will not promise that a future feed will be free of ranking tricks. Ranking is a choice even when you type the topics. Someone still decides order.
If we ever ship a feed, I want the first screen to show why a story is there: you followed this, or this is breaking in the region you typed, or an editor put it there. “For you” with no reason is the thing we said we wouldn’t do.
Until then, personalised is a title leftover. Ignore it.
## Private, the other leftover
A news product can be private about you and still send you to publishers who are not. The destination page can still drop a pixel. A subscription wall can still want an email.
Search is built not to turn queries into ad profiles. That helps the query. It does not clean the article.
The journal may show Google ads on selected pages. That is already more “news and ads” than some people wanted. I’m not going to pretend a future News host automatically solves that. Application hosts are supposed to be outside AdSense. A news product might be a publisher. If it is, we would owe you the same split we already owe on www. Policy: https://www.oernoe.com/legal/privacy
“Without tracking” as an absolute was too big in the stub. I will not reprint it.
## How to read news with the tools that actually open
Use Search for the name of the institution, not the word “update.”
Open two outlets when they disagree. A third engine will not save you from reading.
If you want less profile gravity, signed-out Search, a separate browser profile, a blocker you already trust. We listed tools elsewhere. News was never going to replace that list.
For alerts that matter to safety, do not wait for OerAlerts copy or a News push. Use the official channels your city already runs. Local emergency services. A weather radio. The station you already believe.
## Local editions
The stub promised regions. Regions need staff or a deal with people who already have staff. I will not pretend we have either on the shelf.
If you need a city story, search the city plus the beat. If we miss, use the paper that still has a reporter. I will not be offended.
## What a future honest News post should contain
A host that resolves.
Whether it is a feed, a list, or a search vertical.
Who picks the first ten stories.
Whether we pay publishers.
Whether we rewrite or link.
What is stored when you click.
Whether push exists, and what a push token is.
No season in the title unless the doors are open.
I can write that post when the facts exist. I cannot write it as a beta that “rolls out later in 2026” with the month sanded off.
## How this teaser already caused mess
Support categories and old posts still talk as if the family includes News the way it includes Search. A reader opens a grid and feels late. They are not late.
Product descriptions that mention News next to Drive teach people to expect a suite. Then they wait to switch a homepage. Waiting is how Mail went bad. Don’t wait.
## A morning that does not need this product
Open Search. One news query. Read the page. Close it.
If you want a second angle, second query. Don’t build a slot machine.
If you want this journal, read one long piece. We are trying to stop publishing stubs. This rewrite is part of that.
Then go do something that is not a feed.
## Closing
We talked about a private personalised News. We listed features. We pointed at later in 2026. The host does not resolve. The live family is Search and the other homepage products. I am sorry if you waited. I will not thank you for waiting and then hand you another calendar. Use a paper you can open. Ignore this slug until the URL works.
## Writers we already have, and writers we don’t
This journal has an editorial team byline. That is not a newsroom with beats. Don’t treat a privacy essay as a substitute for a city council recap.
If we ever hire beats, we should say so with names and a corrections policy. We already point at editorial standards from the homepage. A feed would need the same spine, plus timestamps that mean something.
Independent creators in a future mix would still be people. People have axes. A “trusted” badge is a choice. I will not design that badge in a post about a missing host.
## Push notifications, the feature everyone regrets
The stub wanted breaking push. Push is how you give a company a wake-up right. I like fewer of those.
If we ever ask for notification permission, the screen should name the kinds. Weather is not a scandal. A personality quiz is. You should be able to say no and still read.
Until there is a host, there is nothing to permit. Your phone settings can stay shut.
## Ads inside a hypothetical feed
I will say this early so we cannot play surprised. If News is a publisher, it may one day sit closer to the journal than to Search. If News is an app host, it should sit closer to Chat. Those are different ad rules in the current policy. Pick one in public before launch. Don’t mash them.
You can dislike either choice. You should get the choice in writing.
