Most searches are small. A store's hours. A spelling. A stack trace. The name of the street you can see but can't remember. People write about search like it's a philosophy class. Then they type two words and want a link.
Oernoe Search is for those ordinary moments. https://search.oernoe.com
Late August 2026. You can often use the box without an account. Start there.
## What I do on a normal day
I type the words I would have typed anywhere else. I don't invent a special grammar for us. If the first page is close, I click. If it's not, I add a word. If it's still not, I try a different engine for that query and I don't feel guilty.
That's the whole method. Anyone who tells you that you need a course to search the web is selling the course.
I will not claim we index some huge number of pages. I don't have a number I want in this journal. I will not claim we beat Google. Run your own mix.
## Refining without drama
If you searched a person and got the wrong person, add the place or the job.
If you searched an error message, keep the unique bits and drop the line numbers that change every run.
If you searched a product, add the model, not the adjective. "Good laptop" is a mood. A model number is a query.
If you searched a health question, be careful what you click and what you believe. Health the product is a different host. Search is still the open web. The open web includes junk. Oernoe Health is not an emergency room either. If you are in danger, local emergency services.
The original stub mentioned extra information panels on some queries. Sometimes you'll see more than a list of links. Treat panels like a hint, not a verdict. If a panel states a fact you need, confirm it on a page you trust.
## What the product is trying to be
A direct place to begin. Useful results. A quieter page than some of the ones you're leaving.
Search is built so queries aren't used to build an ad profile. That is not the same as "the entire company has no ads." www.oernoe.com can show contextual Google ads. You're probably reading this next to that reality. Policy: https://www.oernoe.com/legal/privacy
We do not sell account or search data. Clicking a result still sends you to someone else's site, with all of that site's habits.
## Everyday categories, without fake stats
Local: hours, address, phone. If the result is a directory spam page, skip it. Try the business name plus the city.
News: add the date if the topic is hot. Yesterday's wording is a different story than last year's.
School: the assignment plus the source type you want. "Primary source" is a useful add-on. "Essay" is how you find essay mills. Don't.
Code: paste the error. Then the language. Then the library. Three tries beats one giant sentence.
Shopping: we may lose. That's fine. Use us for the research writeup and someone else for the coupon if you must.
## Account, or not
You don't need an account to judge the box. Create one when you want Drive, Docs, Chat, Health, or AI on the same login. No credit card to join.
Defaulting the browser is optional and I wrote a separate post for the real URL pattern. Don't use oernoe.com/search?q=%s. That 404s. Use search.oernoe.com.
There is no official Android Search app I can point you to this month. Mobile browser. That's the honest line.
## When results feel broken
Is the host down, or are the links just poor? Tracker first. https://tracker.oernoe.com
Poor links are a quality complaint. Send Support a category or a query if you want. https://support.oernoe.com
Don't file it like an outage unless the page itself fails.
If every result is a language you didn't ask for, add the language. If every result is a year you didn't ask for, add the year.
If you see a page that only exists to advertise at you, click back. I can't sanitize the whole web. I can ask you not to treat result one as destiny.
## How this sits next to AI
AI will answer in a paragraph. Search will give you places. For anything that can hurt — money, medicine, law — I want the places. Then I might use AI to outline. Then I check again.
Don't ask Search to be a chatbot. Don't ask AI to be a citation. Different hosts. https://ai.oernoe.com
## What still needs to improve
Some queries will look thin. Some will look copied from a web that is itself thin. That's the job, still unfinished.
The journal used to talk about search like a finished cathedral. It isn't. The web changes. People type differently on phones. We missed an app date. We still owe you a box that works in a browser.
If you only remember one thing, remember this: ordinary queries are the product. Not a manifesto. Type the small thing. Click the page. Leave when you have it.
## A morning I actually recognize
Coffee is on. I need the building's holiday hours. I type the name and "hours" and the city. I don't need a panel to tell me to call. I need a number that looks like the official site.
Then I need a package error from a library I haven't touched since spring. I paste the error. I add the language. I skip the first result if it's a copy farm. I open the issue tracker if that's where the truth is.
Then someone in the house asks how long to roast vegetables. I type that too. If a results page wants me to watch a ten-minute intro, I click back. Everyday search includes protecting your time.
None of those queries require an account. None of them require a speech about freedom. They require links.
## What I wish we'd stop saying
"Find exactly what you're looking for." Nobody can promise that. The query is sloppy. The web is sloppy. We can promise a box and a list and a habit of not turning the query into an ad profile.
"Billions of pages" on the marketing site is the kind of number I will not repeat here unless I'm ready to defend it. I'm not.
"Lightning" anything. Speed is a feeling. If the page is slow, say so on Tracker. If it's fast, you already noticed.
## Phones
Your thumbs type shorter queries. Autocomplete will try to finish your sentence. If the completion is wrong, delete it. Don't get bullied by a ghost sentence.
Use search.oernoe.com in the mobile browser. Add it to the home screen if your OS lets you, as a site, not as a fake store app.
If the results are hard to tap, that's on us. Tell Support which query class and which phone. "Mobile is bad" is a feeling.
## When you should not use any search box like a friend
If you need a lawyer, get a lawyer. If you need a clinician, get a clinician. If you need the police or an ambulance, use those numbers.
Search can find the hospital's page. It cannot sit with you.
If you're looking up another person in a way that would feel like stalking if they saw the history, stop. Privacy as a company value does not bless that hobby.
## Why the stub existed
The first version said search is never finished. True. It also said people should not feel like a product. Also true, and easy to print. The useful add-on is the mix: use us for the queries we handle, leave for the ones we don't, and don't let a journal post shame you for the leaving.
Everyday web search is a pile of small jobs. We want to be good at the pile. That's the whole ambition, said without a parade.
