Building a Music Service for Artists and Listeners

August 2026: music.oernoe.com exists and may ask for login. Not a launch. Not a royalty schedule. What building is allowed to mean.

A music service has two jobs that fight. Listeners want a song now. Artists want a name, a page, and a way to get paid without becoming a support ticket. Most companies pick a side and decorate the other.

August 2026. I am not going to announce that we picked a side and won. I am going to say what exists, what the old copy invented, and what “building” is allowed to mean when the homepage set is still Search, Health, Chat, AI, Docs, Drive, Tracker.

music.oernoe.com resolves. The last time I hit it, it sent me to account login. That is more than Mail. Mail does not resolve. It is less than a streaming catalog I will describe like Spotify. I do not have a user count. I will not invent one. I will not invent royalty math.

status.oernoe.com has listed Music as a row. A green row means a probe. It does not mean a scene.

## What I can say without a costume

We have wanted a place where a track can live next to the same account you already use for Search. That want is how small companies overbuild. It is also how an independent artist ends up with six “upload here” tabs and no listeners.

If you open Music and you can play something, play it. If you can upload, upload one file you have the rights to. If you cannot do either, you found a login wall or an unfinished room. Write support@oernoe.com with the URL and the time. Don’t write “Music is the future” as a ticket.

## Listeners, the actual jobs

Find a song. Return to it tomorrow. Make a list if lists exist. Follow an artist if follow exists. Turn it off.

That list is boring on purpose. Discovery theater — moods, leaderboards, “because you listened” — is where companies start keeping a second file about you. We already have a Search sentence: queries are not an ad profile. Listening should not become a second ad profile either. I will not claim on-device magic I cannot inspect. I will not reprint the old line that recommendations are “local on your device or aggregated so they never tie back.” That was a vibe.

What I will say: we do not sell account information. We do not provide account data to advertisers for their own direct marketing. The journal may still show ads. A unit next to this essay is not your playback history failing.

If Music asks for a lot of permissions on a phone, leave. Search didn’t need your contacts. Music doesn’t either.

## Artists, the actual jobs

A title. A file you have the right to put up. A name people can search. A page that still exists next month. A way to take the file down. A way to say “this is stolen” without writing a novel.

Payouts are a different product. The old Music stub talked about royalty reports and dashboards. I have not been handed a payout schedule. I will not tell you to quit a distributor because we have a host.

If you upload, keep the master somewhere else too. A small platform is a copy, not a vault. Export if a control exists. If it doesn’t, keep the master anyway.

Don’t upload a track you don’t control. We are a small team. We cannot be your lawyer. Copyright fights need a URL, a duration, and a claim you can stand. support@oernoe.com. I’m not going to walk an enforcement playbook here.

## What the early-access copy got loud about

Leaderboards. Artist dashboards. Genre and mood browse. Curated playlists. Community-driven everything.

Some of those may be on the screen when you log in. Some may be leftovers from a mock. I will not narrate a leaderboard I am not looking at. If you see one, remember it is a popularity contest. Popularity contests get gamed. They also leak a little about what a crowd is doing. Don’t treat a chart as a culture.

“Early access” is a phrase that ages into “we never said it was done.” If the product is usable, say usable. If it is a preview, say preview. I am saying: host exists, login exists, I will not call it launched as a competitor to the majors.

## How Music should not steal time from Search

Search is the front door. Music is optional. If you came here because the homepage felt like a warehouse, start at search.oernoe.com and ignore this post.

A company that pauses Search quality to polish a waveform is a company that forgot how people arrived.

Tracker and Status should not look healthier for Music than for Search. Right now Status names Music and does not always name Search. That is backwards if Search is the product people can judge in five minutes. I want that fixed. I cannot date the fix.

## Privacy, without a headphone sticker

Playback can be account data if you are signed in. That is how “your library” works. It is not nothing. It should not become an advertising dossier. If we ever ask to use listening for ads, that would be a different company. I have not been asked to write that ask.

Signed-out listening, if the product allows it, is the lower-gravity path. I will not invent a guest mode. Look at the screen.

Don’t put a private demo in a public upload and then get angry at a scraper. Public is public.

The marketing site may show ads. Music is an application host. The current policies say AdSense is not supposed to load on service subdomains. Believe https://www.oernoe.com/legal/privacy if I slip.

## Devices

Use the mobile browser. There is no official Music app I will send you to. There is no official Search app either. Shortcuts are doors.

Cars, TVs, watches: I will not pretend we have a partner program. If it doesn’t AirPlay or Cast, it doesn’t. Use the phone speaker and live your life.

## What building looks like from the outside

You should see fewer teaser screenshots and more sentences like: you can upload this kind of file, this size, this length. You can take it down. You can report a copy. You can export your list. You cannot get paid here yet — or you can, and here is the page.

Until those sentences exist in the product, this journal should sound unfinished. Unfinished is honest. “Community-driven streaming platform with unique twists” was not.

## A first hour I would actually recommend

If you are a listener: log in, try one search for an artist you already know, play thirty seconds, leave. If that fails, you don’t owe us a playlist.

If you are an artist: don’t migrate a catalog. Put one track you can stand to lose a weekend on. See if the page is shareable. Send it to one friend, not a press list. Keep the master.

If neither hour appeals, skip Music. The account still works. Search still works. That is allowed.

## Closing

Building a music service is easy to announce and hard to staff. Artists need takedowns. Listeners need the song to start. Both need us not to turn a queue into an ad file. August 2026: we have a host and a login and a Status row. We do not have a story I will print as a launch. Come back when you can do the job. Until then, use the player you already pay for, and use Oernoe for Search.
